A Brief History of Grayslake

Grayslake’s story begins in the 1830s, when pioneers first settled the land after the Potawatomi were removed from the area following the Black Hawk War. Early settler William M. Gray homesteaded property along an unspoiled lake that would eventually bear his name, and the surrounding community grew alongside it. In 1886, the Wisconsin Central Railroad completed a station in the area, and Grayslake was formally platted as a subdivision soon after.

The village was officially incorporated on May 9, 1895, with a population of just a few hundred residents. Its early economy was shaped by agriculture and small manufacturing, including businesses like the Grayslake Gelatin Factory and the Wisconsin Condensed Milk Company, whose iconic smokestack still marks the town’s skyline today. By the end of World War I, the population had roughly doubled, and growth continued steadily through the twentieth century despite setbacks like the Great Depression and periodic flooding.

The most dramatic transformation, however, came from 1990 onward. What had once been a small agricultural town evolved into one of Lake County’s most active and fast-growing communities, home to new schools, businesses, and residential neighborhoods, while still holding onto the historic downtown character that longtime residents cherish.
